Scone Park Pond

This is Scone Park Pond.  We planted it many years ago and since then it has been invaded by narrow-leaved bulrush (Typha angustifolia.)  The seed was probably brought in on the feet of water birds or blown in directly.  It’s a nice plant but not if it joins your island to the bank and threatens to cover the pond completely.

Perth & Kinross Council asked us to clear the plants which involved partially draining the pond and taking a 5T excavator and 7T tracked dumper in to hoick out lots of the plants.

It worked very well and about 55T of plants and silt came out.  If small amounts of the Typha spring up again, they can be dealt with easily using a herbicide.
