Hermitage Drive Garden

Built in 2018 and designed by Carolyn Grohmann of Secret Gardens Designs, this garden near the Hermitage required a patio built to wrap around a large conservatory.

New paving, stone walling and steps were installed along with a sunken patio area to allow the owners a sheltered spot in what is a surprisingly windy part of Edinburgh.

The challenge for both the design and the build was how to do this and avoid it looking like acres of stone walling and paving.  The answer was a combination of buff coloured sandstone walling to tie in with part of the house construction, black basalt paving, wall copes and steps which don’t shout for attention and large planting beds.  These are situated in front of the new sandstone walls and in tiered levels around the conservatory – something which alleviated the health and safety issue of a large drop onto the lawn but also now brings planting right up to the glass of the conservatory.
