Beveridge Park Wetland, Fife

In 2006 Fife Council approached us to come up with a design for an area of wet ground next to the boating lake in Beveridge Park, Kirkcaldy.  The area had formerly been a “petting zoo” but this had been cleared away and a permanently wet piece of ground was left, ideal for conversion into a wildlife friendly wetland.

Wetland and Boardwalk

The design we came up with was for a shallow wetland with a boardwalk running across it.  A spring fed water into the system and an overflow took it out and into the lake.  We planted the shallow water with brooklime, flag iris, water mint, purple loosestrife and burr reed and a deeper area in front of the pond dipping platform got water lilies, hornwort and water soldier.

Wildlife haven

The result has been a stable, diverse wetland and the excavated material which was built into banks was perfect for sowing wildflower mixes into.
