Water Gems

Fife Garden

A newly completed garden is often difficult to photograph as it takes time for young plants to fill out and for the edges of hard landscaping to soften and weather.  However, with the help of a frothy bank of wildflowers seeded this spring and stunning views across the Firth of Forth towards the bridges, this garden looks remarkably at home in its setting only a few weeks after completion in the summer of 2011.

A figure of eight-shaped pond with a ribbon edging of cut sandstone, bold marginal planting and a glass-like surface punctuated with water soldiers and lilies, provide the centrepiece to the garden.  A green roofed arbour set against dry stone walling and with a spacious deck below, provides a sheltered seating area from which to contemplate the pool.

With uninterrupted views, the family hot tub sits mid lawn.  A cedar boardwalk leads from the house to the hot tub allowing for a comfortable barefoot journey which eliminates grass cuttings from the hot tub.  And, on a generous cedar deck, two inviting Adirondack chairs provide the best vantage point from which to take in the river, countryside and sky.

This garden was designed by Carolyn Grohmann of Secret Gardens.
